For centuries Black Soap ("dudu osun" in the Yoruba language, the most popoulous ethnic group in South West Nigeria) has been used in West Africa for cleaning the body and washing the hair. Since the beginning Black Soap was also used in traditional spiritual cleansing rituals.
Today, due to its deep and gentle cleansing properties, it is frequently recommended in the care of various skin irritations. The main ingredients of Black Soap are karité butter, black palm oil and the ash of the palm fruit. Karité butter is made in a lengthy and intricate process out of the kernel of the sheanut. The women of West Africa have used it for hundreds of years as a beauty care, a massage oil and as an ingredient in making soap and candles. The particularly soft, eatable butter-like substance can be used in cooking as well as an internal purifying agent by traditional healers. It is not surprising that the tree of the multi-purpose sheanut is historically, and in modern society, highly regarded. They are conceived as sacred, are never cut and the fruit is only harvested after it has fallen naturally to the ground.
grazie!
